WHO SAID IT?

"Last year was tough for a lot of reasons... There were a few missteps in that the cast got a little big and there were a few too many people for the audience to care about."

-- A LOST cast member
-- A DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES cast member
-- A WITHOUT A TRACE cast member

JAMES DENTON on why DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES lost viewers last season.

from here

Man, I wish someone from Lost had the guts to say that. It wasn't even as true for DH as it was for Lost! Sure, the Applewhites were boring and pointless but c'mon, Lee Tergesen's guest shot? Awesome! DH still has a smaller cast of principals than Lost and did a much better job of juggling plotlines, if you ask me. It's not like 6 entire episodes were devoted to the Applewhites, the way Lost did with the Tailies.

I respect people who can come out and aknowledge their mistakes. I don't watch Desperate Housewives, but I've heard their second season was a little lackluster too. Kudos to James Denton, and here's hoping the show he's on actually learns from their mistakes instead of pretending they didn't happen then possibly starting the cycle all over again. *sigh*

I know! And Marc Cherry (DH's creator) has apologized too. But maybe ABC leaned on them harder? I know Lost lost a million viewers last season, so they're not exactly doing as well as they were either.

Though I agree with you about James at least having the guts to come out and admit the season was lackluster, I respectfully must disagree about the comparison between the quality of Desperate Housewives' second season and the quality of Lost's second season. Lost, at the very least, however faulty the casting, at least did something DIFFERENT from season 1. DH followed the EXACT same formula and had absolutely NOTHING new to say. They went by the 'if it works, run it into the ground' way of thinking.

Buuuut that's just my opinion. That and a 75 cents might get you a cup of coffee. ;)

We'll have to agree to disagree with the relative merits of S2 of Lost. In my mind, they tried to reinvent the wheel by going back to the beginning, but with new characters they mistakenly thought we'd be interested in. I don't think they realize how much we liked the original ones.

I just wish they'd embrace that it's supposed to be a deserted island in the middle of nowhere and stop importing new people. *le sigh* Ok, Desmond I like. He can stay. And Alex.
