WTF? If it's true, then that's just awful. If it's fake, then it's just cruel.

Color me very shocked. I hope there's more to this story, if it's true. :-/

Did he throw things or something, or did he just scream at them because that technically is assault, if he hit them, it's battery.

I don't know, but damn either way. I really want to wait to hear what happened, only because Us isn't exactly the most reliable source of news or information.

I have no idea -- last I checked, no details were available. :-/ The story is all over the place, unfortunately, but I hope we'll get the whole story soon.

What?! Now that'd be the last thing I'd have expected from the guy *shocked face*. Though seeing the lack of information I'd wait to say anything :/

I read that in the UK, they arrest people before questioning them -- if that's the case it looks a tiny bit less bad that just "arrested" but still. He always seemed like such a cool guy.

Yes, that's what they're saying in the latest updates. He does seem like a very cool guy so I hope it turns out to be nothing.

I haven't seen anything on CNN or other reliable news sources yet. He did look pretty upset at the UK premire though...

His rep released a statement through People:

"Christian Bale attended a London police station today, on a voluntary basis, in order to assist with an allegation that had been made against him to the police by his mother and sister," the actor's reps said in the statement. "Mr. Bale who denies the allegation, co-operated throughout, gave his account in full of the events in question, and has left the station without any charge being made against him by the police. At this time, there will be no further comment by Mr. Bale."

And some sites are saying his mother was drunk, attacked him first. We shall see!

I think it will come out (as it seems to be doing now) that he's really done nothing wrong.

Well, that's good. I hate when things like this come around, most the time I think the press just like to stir things up.

ONTD is picking up sources that say he doesn't get on well with his mom and sister that they are freeloading drunks, etc. Which I'm more likely to believe.

IIRC he was first taken in before the premiere, released so that he could attend the premiere and now I guess he's just going back to take care of business. It's unfortunate. I wonder what the hell happened.

I'm inclined to believe the reports that his mother and sister are the source of the trouble. We shall see!

It was apparently most a verbal "assault," and reports are coming in now that his mother and sister are the source of the problem. We shall see! I would hate to think he'd beaten anyone up!

bzuh? That story is so weird and completely without any detail or explanation...color me confused. :\ I don't want to believe that's true. How strange.

ETA: I read some of the other comments people made about his fam and I'd have to say, with him being a child actor and all, it would not surprise me in the slightest if his mom was scary. Any parent who puts a kid in showbiz...

The story is very odd and part of the WTFness is the difference in the British legal system with it probably only being a verbal assault and the whole "arresting" in order to get some questions answered.

You make an excellent point about him being a child star. He seems to have done just fine but from what I'm reading now, his father was the supportive one and the mother (might be) a bit of a freeloader. I'm sure we'll have all the gory details soon!

I hardly believe he was beating them up, however bad the blood between them is!

1) Assault is not the same as battery. Battery is actually hitting someone, assault is behaving in any way that makes them reasonably believe that a threat is present, with "reasonably" interpreted so broadly that spitting on someone can bring about an assault charge. Bale's a big dude; he very well might have just gotten agitated and loomed.

2) I can allege that my neighbor is breaking the noise ordinances by entertaining oompa-loompas around the corner, and it can still take some time to get thrown out of court. Also, law enforcement has reached a place where reports of male-on-female violence are dealt with very swiftly, because the dross is far more uncommon than the legit complaints.

3) Apparently, the British legal system functions differently from the American one, in that Bale appears to have been "arrested" before the police actually spoke to him.

4) I really doubt that the police would have responded with "Coolios, off you go" to Bale showing up on his own and saying, "I didn't do it" if there was strong evidence of harm.

Goddamn noisy oompa loompas! ;)

I'm with you -- this looks like a) it's been blown out of proportion even if there was, say, a bit of shoving, and b) living in H-wood, I've never heard one bad thing about Bale so I'm inclined to believe that this is really not of his doing here. I'm sure we'll all hear about how fucked-up his mother (and perhaps his childhood) are, etc, very soon. :-/ He seems like he survived being a child star quite nicely, tho.

It's now coming out that it was verbal assault that he was charged with, so "BALE HITS HIS MOTHER OH NOES" is more like, "Uh, this one time Bale yelled at his mother in public."

Crazy, right? I read it on the BBC and was so surprised. It must have been a very tense situation.

Also, I had no idea he was British.

Oh yep, definitely British, although he does often play a Yank. (And who knew you could get arrested for simply yelling at someone in the UK?)
