Writing meme/Interests collage

MEME, stolen from most of my flist:
Ask me anything you want about any of my stories: how I thought of the idea, what I did to write it, what I was thinking when I wrote it, what I feel about it, what I wish I'd done differently, etc.

-- Too bad there's a generic angel for the TV show Angel and Slash from G'n'R instead of some hot man-on-man action! LOL.

The angel made sense, but yeah, I laughed for a minute over Slash. It's kinda cool to see which pics people chose from the ten though :)

LOL at your icon. Bwah!

I didn't click through for most of them unless I just hated the first pic. And since I'm on a Mac, the option to delete pics didn't work. Oh well! I tried to get rid of Slash, I really did!

And since I'm on a Mac, the option to delete pics didn't work.

Did you get an error when you tried to do it? Does Mac not have a Ctrl key? I've never used a Mac. Would like to know what I have to fix.

Macs do have a Ctrl key, but it's the equivalent of right-clicking, I think. What you get is a menu that pops up: "Open link in new window/Save Image to Desktop," etc. So that command didn't work to delete the pictures. No big deal. ;)

Does it have an alt-key? A meta-key?
Sep. 2nd, 2006 07:55 pm (UTC)
No, what you have on either side of the space bar is:

On the left hand side you also have:

And on the right hand side is:

Up top, there's ESC and DELETE and that's about it!

Wait, there's a tiny "ALT" lettered above on the OPTION key.
Sep. 2nd, 2006 08:04 pm (UTC)
Changed it to work for the alt-key too.

Thanks :)

Ha! I wonder! One of mine is "skepticism" so I got a lot of philosophers. I ended up with just a blurry face. Hmmm.

Tell me how you got the idea to make Jack a priest in that one AU.

Also, any insight into the genesis of the two torture/bondage stories? ("Show of Strength" I think, and...I'm so bad with titles, you know the ones I mean, right?)

If that's not too many questions, what was it like being in the main collaborator on the Jack/James verse? Anything you'd like to share about that experience?
Aug. 23rd, 2006 02:06 am (UTC)
The first two are rather straightforward -- other people suggested them, more or less.

I'd written a story (the one where Kate steals Jack's pants!) in which Jack momentarily wishes he were a priest. And someone commented that they'd love to see a fic with Jack as a priest. And since I was in a noirish frame of mind, I went to a "last rites" prison scenario with that.

And I think the non-con in that is what made foxxcub ask me to write another non-con, but with ust Jack and Sawyer, which became "The Use of Force" and its sequel, "Show of Strength." I pretty much replicated the Confidence Man scenario (Sawyer being blamed for something he didn't do, etc.) but with just Jack doing the interrogating. And the rest just followed from there.

As far as the Jack/James stories, I encouraged foxxcub to write a sequel to "Amateurs" since I loved it so much and I was very surprised when she handed it off to me! And then we started to talk about it on AIM all the time. We would discuss what should come next and who should write it. Neither of us expected it to become so involved and go so far! There wasn't going to be any "real" sex and neither of them would say the "L" word, but of course all that changed, the deeper it got. When you wrote "The Deep End," we both agreed that raised the whole series to a new level.

I probably discussed the J/J fics I wrote with her more than other writers, who I think wrote theirs and then showed them to her. (Which I only really did with the holiday AU to the AU fic, as that was a present.) So each one I wrote is very much a collaboration. I would sometimes depart from what we'd talked about, and vice versa, but I think that's true of any story you've mapped out, even just for yourself. Sometimes it ends up going somewhere you didn't foresee. Anyway, I feel very honored to have been part of it! And we've talked about doing some more fics since we both hated to see it end!

Sawyer = Tennis coach? Really? ;D
Aug. 23rd, 2006 02:11 am (UTC)
Got the idea for a tennis fic at the local park, which has tennis courts. And since "Jack and Sawyer are never far from my mind, voila! I can't remember all the prompts I was trying to work in (one of them was for "hands"), but now that I know D loves white so much, I thought I could fit that in there too.

I could see Sawyer dazzling everyone in a country club setting and having a rich field of people to seduce and have money thrown at him without even having to work a con. (Perhaps a touch of "Match Point" there.)

Eh, not the most plausible AU ever, but hey, it's a luau fic. *shrugs*

"Wild Horses" is still one of my absolute favourite Lost fics ever - so tell me about writing that. What was the inspiration for it? Was is the songs you chose or did they come later once the fic started to take shape?

You write AUs a lot (and exceedingly well) what is it about them that you like writing? Do you find them more freeing than writing Island based fic or are they in fact harder to write?

Lastly, are there any characters that you would like to write that you haven't or that you would like to write more of (doesn't have to be Lost) and why? Is there anything in particular that stops you from writing them?

Oh wow! *blushes* Thank you, love!

That one came out of a very long writers' block during which I thought I might never end up writing again. I was listening to some music and the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" started to play and the idea sprang to mind. I still had to futz with it a lot and rewrite but I was just so happy to be able to write something again! I guess that's my first songfic! ;)

I like AUs partly because it's fun to stretch the characters a bit, which I like to do anyway with fics set on the island, making one or the other of them darker or more dominant from fic to fic, changing the dynamics up. It's no secret that Jack and Sawyer are the two characters I care most about, so putting them in a new setting is a way not to have to deal with anyone else, although I have often brought other Lost characters into the AU.

I turn to AUs so much because canon seems so limited. There are only so many cave/beach/hatch fics you can write, I guess, especially when everyone else is writing similar scenarios. (Although there are oodles of J/S fics where they meet in a bar pre-island, or a hotel, post-island, but still, I think there's enough variety and freedom there.) AUs are very freeing, although often extra research is required for a new setting/occupation, etc.

I do like to work within canon in an island-based fic, and I always get inspiration from the show, even if I don't like the overall direction it's going. There really is a rich mine of neglected storylines there, and I often take my cue from that. I just get frustrated with their priorities and I have to detour to focus on what I'm interested in, whether it ends up being an AU or not.

I think it would be fun to attempt Giles or some other Buffyverse characters. That's a show I watched religously, to the bitter end, but wasn't into fandom or fic writing then. I envy people who can write POTC fic so well, like you(!) but the dialect is quite intimidating! I'd like to write more SPN but I'm not as driven as I am with Lost. Sawyer and Jack just kind of live in my head and demand to be written about far, far more often! There are plenty of shows I've enjoyed watching that I felt no particular drive to add onto. Lost really is pretty unique in that aspect, for me. I think the show's incompleteness and multiple storylines and characters is frustrating as a viewer but a boon to fic writers who have so many places to jump off from. You can literally write almost any kind of Lost fic and not have it be a huge departure!

(And I love your shiny new Jack icon! ;D)

I'm rather dreading S3 ... hold me! New canon always takes a while to warm up to, since anymore I'm just using it as inspiration and so rarely enjoy it on its own merits. Well, I did love the S2 finale so ... *crosses fingers*

I too am dreading season 3. I am purposefully remaining spoiler free as the few spoilers I have seen made me depressed. meh. I think it's gonna be a bad season as far as I am concerned. :(
