Spoiler re Sawyer

Just read this over at TWoP.

Minor Sawyer spoiler and much speculation behind LJ-cut:

Jack is reluctant to help Sawyer when he begins to suffer from excruciating headaches.
What does it mean? Something seriously wrong with Sawyer? (Augh!) At the very least more Jack/Sawyer interaction, which you know I'm happy about. Could even be kind of funny, I guess. As long as it's nothing serious. (Prepares poison apple for Bad Robot if anything happens to Sawyer!)

And I happen to have a headache myself, just now. Cause for concern? Dundundun...

I read that earlier too. Guh. I'm hoping for it to be played for the funny too. Like in the last episode. But I fear that scene was just playful foreshadowing of something, uh, less playful. :/

Well, I've already got a plot bunny out of it, as you might have guessed.

Don't hurt my Sawyer! (Well, not permanently, of course. Short-term suffering is all good.)

Just don't be "the sickness!" ACK! If they kill off Sawyer I'm gonna ... cry. And stop watching. And then cry some more.

Wheee! I can't wait for your plot bunny to come about, hee!

And I hope it's not "the sickness" either. Grrrr. That's be awful.

And now I'm freaking out a little bit. In an effort to apply logic and possibly wishful thinking, migraines (or migraine-like headaches; there is actually a difference but I'll be damned if I can remember it now) can arise for a variety of reasons. 1) Dehydration. A headache and general feeling of being tired is are some of the first symptoms, actually. I doubt Sawyer is welcome at the caves, so he's probably going up there only when neccessary, he was carrying a water bottle with him in the last episode, and dehydration is one of those things that will sneak up on you and knock you right on your ass because we're accustomed to a society where the ready availability of fresh water just isn't a problem. 2) Protein deficiency. This has been built up over the past several episodes as a major emerging problem, and three of the symptoms are once again fatigue, headache, and general irritability (sidenote: if all of this ties into Sawyer's one throwaway scene in 'Numbers' I'm going to be the writers' bitch forever). Again, I doubt if the castaways are finding Sawyer's antics so charming now that they've been going on for over a month and aren't likely to be inviting him to any barbeques, and I doubt that he would admit the weakness, anyway. Like dehydration, protein deficiency is so ordinarily not a problem in post-industrial societies (most of us get more than we need) that this simply might not occur to Jack or Sawyer because it's not an issue that's dealt with in the world they're used to. 3) I'm blocking these into one because they're slim and frankly dumb chances: Food allergy or stress. No further explanation needed there, but if it's stress I might sock someone.

I really doubt that the big death this season is Sawyer, though the debilitating headaches issues makes me worry about possible 'sickness'. Not after the comment Kristen made about 'beautiful brown eyes', not after Harold Perrineau has supposedly been offered a really plumb role in an upcoming A-list movie. Though, when I read it for the first time? Could not control my nervous little stomach clench. THIS MAN IS UNDER MY SKIN. Then I thought of you and Jack/Sawyer h/c and cackled.

Also on TWOP:
102429_3833 -- LOST - "Do No Harm" - Claire goes into labor while a helpless Charlie goes into panic mode. Meanwhile Locke is missing, Jack tends to a wounded survivor and Sayid presents Shannon with a romantic surprise, on "Lost," WEDNESDAY, APRIL 6 (8:00-9:01 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network. (ABC/MARIO PEREZ)

'Wounded' is an awfully odd way of phrasing it, but could this be Sawyer they're talking about here?

I was trying to stay spoiler-free but these hiatuses just weaken my resolve!

A few other reasons for headaches: sinus pressure, low blood sugar (no carbs!), withdrawal from nicotine maybe? The major ones would be brain tumor or something. Eek! If he's suffering from heat stroke, it seems others would be too.

I don't know what they're going to do with this. Either it's fixable or it isn't. It has to have a point, such as more Jack/Sawyer interaction and the reversal of Sawyer actually needing help for once. I've read a few really good fics where Sawyer was in real trouble and did not want to ask for help, resulting in, of course, more Sawyer suffering. Except in both those cases, Jack was glad to help. Why is Jack reluctant here? Does he think Sawyer is faking it (ahem), or he just doesn't *care* that Sawyer is suffering? Or that maybe he thinks he's simply exaggerating how bad it is. Wouldn't Jack know that Sawyer hates to ask for help, though? Hmmm. Wow, can we analyze something to death, huh? ;->

I think they know how popular Sawyer is and that his character's story has *not* run its course. Plus if they make him sick, can he still "redeem" himself as one would expect before they sent him to the big roadhouse in the sky? I mean, if they do ever kill him off, I'd think it would be sacrificing himself to save Kate or even Jack. You know, the Boromir way out.

If they kill off Michael, I'm totally fine with that. In fact, I think I might cheer that we wouldn't be subjected to another boring Michael backstory!

Yeah, one J/S h/c headache fic coming up from me soon! Hee.

I have serious doubts about Sawyer surviving to the end of the series, but I can't see him being killed this soon, barring maybe Josh wanting out. There have been too many hints of a redemption storyline being thrown out, and Sawyer remains an asshole. And since Josh has over and over again expressed a nearly puppyish gratitude for being offered what he sees as his big break....

Mmm...nicotine...I hadn't thought of that. God I hope not, I still have a fic to write. I don't think Jack would honestly let Sawyer suffer if he thought there was really something seriously wrong with him; I don't think the writers are prepared to take him that dark just yet. The worst I can see him being set up for is a case of hubris...which would segue nicely into 'Do No Harm'.

Oooh. Theory. Jack underestimates the severity of Sawyer's symptoms 'cause he's attributing all the worst character traits he can think of to someone he doesn't like and thinks Sawyer's exaggerating (forgetting that Sawyer is the numbskull stubborn enough to let himself be tortured rather than let go of the defiance), Sawyer passes out or something and gets injured, Jack gets smacked with the hubris stick. This would mesh with the meat of 'Do No Harm' and fulfill the 'wounded castaway' criteria. Granted, this is likely crackaddled, but I am amused all the same.
Mar. 11th, 2005 11:22 pm (UTC)
OMG, your theory's a J/S, h/c, angst addict fangirl's dream! (salivates)

That needs to be fic-ified, doncha think? My bunny was a lot less dramatic, frankly. And god knows I love the melodrama. ;-) So are you handing me that one to run with or were you going to do something with it? (Miss "I've Only Written One Lost Fic!")

And I agree it seems far too soon to kill off Sawyer based on his (perceived) character arc and Josh's loyalty to the show. I doubt he'd pull a David Caruso and go make movies. He's waited too long for his big break to blow it. And JJ wouldn't be so stupid as to kill him off. I hope!
Mar. 13th, 2005 12:15 am (UTC)
I think there's plenty of room for us both to write a fic centering around some sort of nicotine withdrawal, quite honestly. I've had one half-written since around Christmas time, but then I got distracted by this massive Angelverse project I have going and some unintentional resemblances it was beginning to bear to another 'Lost' fic. It's Sawyer/Sayid and more light humor/introspection than h/c, so I'm sure we won't be stepping on each other's toes.

Hmmm. The massive Angelverse project will be hitting 50K on Monday; I think I'll take a break from it afterwords and write this puppy before Abrams screws me over hard. Whoa. The long hiatus is proving useful. Apocalypse sure to follow.
Mar. 12th, 2005 12:34 am (UTC)
*nodds* I could see everyone starting to doubt Jack's capability if he did that. Which, of course, would be hott to me.
Mar. 12th, 2005 12:46 am (UTC)
InDisgrace!Jack. Ha! It will never happen that Sawyer is in favor and Jack is out. If it didn't happen after the torture, I can't imagine it ever would.

But Jack being all angsty and doubting himself (well, more than usual). I can go for some of that.
Mar. 13th, 2005 12:17 am (UTC)
Oh, yeah. Give me the angst; I'm shallow and shall wallow in it gleefully.
Mar. 12th, 2005 12:31 am (UTC)
See? He's a total Boromir. ~__^
Mar. 12th, 2005 12:48 am (UTC)
Yup! I was gonna do a Lost/LoTR crossover at one point.

BTW: I have a fic based on your bunny (well, cross-bred with my own bunny) to post soon! Which means my poll is now kind of moot. Oh well!
Mar. 11th, 2005 10:49 pm (UTC)
Dude. You are the only one allowed to inflict illness on Sawyer. PERIOD. Not producers and writers...*shivers in fear of foreshadowing*
Mar. 11th, 2005 10:53 pm (UTC)
You would liken Sawyer to Boromir...*snuggles*

Weee, I'm SO friggin' glad to be back in LJ Land!! ^____^
Mar. 11th, 2005 11:10 pm (UTC)
Two of my all-time faves, sigh.

Welcome back! Wantonly wasting time wasn't as much fun without ya!
Mar. 11th, 2005 11:09 pm (UTC)
Aw, thanks. Hee. And I've certainly inflicted enough pain and suffering on Sawyer for a lifetime or two!

Mar. 12th, 2005 01:25 am (UTC)
Yes, dammit, LIVE!!!!!!!!! *sniff*
Mar. 12th, 2005 12:06 am (UTC)
Excruciating headaches could be anything. Some people are migraine sufferers their whole life; maybe Sawyer is one of them and the problem just hasn't cropped up yet.

Reasons for Jack not helping him:
1. He doesn't like the guy - simple.
2. Medication may be running low and Jack may feel it's more important to save painkillers for the really bad injuries.
3. Extenuating circumstances. We don't know how this is going to be played out. Maybe Sawyer does something in that episode that REALLY pisses Jack off. Maybe there's a -reason- Jack assumed he's exaggerating (if that's the reason behind Jack not helping him).

Besides, it's says "reluctant" to help, not "refuses" to help. If I disliked someone as much as Jack apparently dislikes Sawyer, I'd probably be slightly reluctant to feed 'em half my valuable medicine supply too.

And yeah, I'm grasping at staws here because OMG IT CAN'T BE SOMETHING SERIOUS!! ;_; *Sawyercling* I will seriously fly over to America and gather a mob to wage war on the ABC HQ if they think about depriving us of our favourite jackhole.
Mar. 12th, 2005 12:45 am (UTC)
Some very good points. "Reluctant" is not "refuses." Jack *doesn't* like Sawyer (No matter how much he secretly wants him. ;-) ) So that probably covers it, really.

I can see a scenario where Jack is hoarding the meds and doesn't feel a headache is good enough reason to dole some out. If it's a really bad migraine, Sawyer could have impaired vision too (meaning he'll end up wounded?) We know he'll be cranky at the very least.

God, we're doing all this speculating and then it always turns out when it's not a Sawyer-centric ep, his scenes are so damn brief. Oh well, let there be fic to fill the void.

And yeah, I'm clinging to our favorite jackhole, too. *g*

[[ Jack *doesn't* like Sawyer (No matter how much he secretly wants him. ;-) ) ]]

*grin* Dude, who could NOT want Sawyer? I mean... the -dimples-... the -hair-... the sleazy charm... what's not to secretly lust after?? ;)

*amused* Every time Sawyer starts acting hawt on Lost, my boyfriend turns around and gives me a Look. And everyone else in the room cracks up (we have friends over to watch it each week). I'm so damn transparent. ^_^;
Mar. 12th, 2005 12:45 am (UTC)
I agree...I don't think it's anything serious. I mean, at the very least, look at the previews for the new episodes. They always play up minor events. "OMG, Charlie is slipping off a bridge they'regoingtokillhimoff!!!" "OMG someone lit the while beach on fire!!!" or "OMG this whole episode is about Kate and Sawyer skinny dipping!!!"

I love this about Jack's character: he can be so...harsh? (Word choice is tough here.)
I love that exchange in "The Case" where Jack says he'll withhold the medicine for Sawyer's arm and Sawyer says he wouldn't do it. The serious look Jack gives him when he tells him that he would...*sigh* Great stuff. And that trait is kind of curious coupled with his need to keep people safe and alive. Hm. I guess I get it when I think of it in terms of my own personality. I just don't have time for people who try to be cute and put others in jeopardy. I swear, if I were on that island, Sawyer'd be on my short-short list.

"OMG this whole episode is about Kate and Sawyer skinny dipping!!!"
If only!

That was a great exchange in "The Case," esp. if you're a J/S whore like me. ;-> I loved how Sawyer actually seemed to respect Jack more when he got tough and threatening. The best canon basis yet for Ballsy!Jack.

I guess I get it when I think of it in terms of my own personality.
So true. Maybe that's why I was always writing HeartonSleeve!Jack. Because that's so me, dammit! Not that I can't be *harsh* too, but ultimately I'm just a pussycat. Unless I don't like you. Then, brrrr!

If I were on that island, Sawyer'd be on my short-short list. I'm guessing that's not the same as your "To Do" list. ;->
Mar. 12th, 2005 02:21 am (UTC)
They better not hurt Sawyer!

That said, I bet it's eyestrain. Too much reading! :)
Mar. 12th, 2005 02:40 am (UTC)
Yes, what your icons says! Too pretty to die!

Ah, maybe Sawyer needs glasses? Hee. And not the sparkly orange kind either.
