Lost backstory poll

Slow Monday so I thought I'd do a poll. Pick your favorite backstory. Not the overall episode, but just what happened in the backstory. If you can remember! Organized by character. And then I might do a run-off poll to determine the best of the best.

If you can't recall what happened in which episode, this might help: http://www.epguides.com/lost/

I can't even remember which eps were which backstories. I guess I'd have to study up a bit before I could take this poll. Maybe I'll have time tonight.

You could go here: http://www.epguides.com/lost/

I should have put in a brief description, eh? I have trouble remembering a lot of them too.

Bah, this is where owning S2 on dvd would come in handy. Or you know, seeing most of S3 *face palm* I'm a bad fangirl.
Mar. 5th, 2007 09:05 pm (UTC)
Aww. Well, the early backstories have been the best, for the most part. The last Jack one, for example ... *shudders* I think everyone can agree that's definitely the weakest one yet!
Mar. 5th, 2007 08:59 pm (UTC)
Funny how almost all of the ones I picked were from S1. I guess that's to be expected since they were all fresh then and we were just getting to know the characters. I had a hard time with a couple (Michael, Sun and Jin) because all of their flashbacks have left me cold. I wonder if the flashback format is going stale. (I'm tempted to say yes.)
Mar. 5th, 2007 09:03 pm (UTC)
LOL, that's pretty much the point of the poll. I think they have run out of ideas for most of the characters -- and they've admitted as much since that's their reason for bringing in all these new characters. A lot of these left me cold too (like Michael) so this is definitely not the best format to determine the best overall backstory. I could have done it by season, but I don't think there's enough options per question to have done that.

It's the rare later backstory that's better than an earlier one. For me, I prefer "I Do" to Kate's previous eps, partly because the first ones were all about "what did she do?" And I liked her and Kevin's story. As far as Michael and Claire - their island-based backstories ended up being slightly more interesting, IMHO.
Mar. 5th, 2007 09:29 pm (UTC)
In my opinion, the execution of the flashbacks, and what they meant for the characters, seems to have been done better in the beginning. However, I'm not entirely sure that isn't just because we were just getting to know the characters so we assumed everything they told us about them was relevant to the story and to what was going on on the island. As time wore on, the flashbacks seemed to connect less. Which is why, I believe, the on-island flashbacks was a genius idea, flashing back both Michael and Claire to events that took place during their absences on the island. It was smart, and a good cure for the, lets face it, tedium of those two character's off-island backstories.

I did, however, pick a few seasons two and three backstories that I feel were done very well, in particular: The Hunting Party and I Do. I adore both episodes, and feel they told me very important things about both Jack and Kate. They're among my top favorites for each season.
Mar. 5th, 2007 09:53 pm (UTC)
For some characters, like Locke, the first one was absolutely the best. All of Michael's remain at the bottom of any list of Lost episodes, but the on-island one was a vast improvement from the endless custody-o-rama. And while I liked Claire's original backstory, the island one was so trippy and showed us Drugged!Claire, which was awesome. :)

I did really like The Hunting Party and I Do. *nods* It wasn't until S3 that the Jackbacks started to completely tank, IMHO. Anymore, it seems like they have no idea what to do in the flashbacks, other than hit us over the head with the Big Issues of the show. Which is a shame.

What an eye-opener: Eko seriously had THREE episodes?

I seem to be in the minority on some of the rest of these.

Interesting poll idea!

I know! I couldn't believe it either, but there it is. Would've preferred another Boone or Shannon ep instead.

I find myself picking the first backstories for most of these.....except for Kate (I'm not a big fan of her backstories because they don't really answer anything and I only choose "I Do" because OMG!CaptainTightpants!). I find it absolutely hilarious that Claire has had only two episodes in three seasons. She has as many as Desmond! LOLz!!!!
Mar. 6th, 2007 03:27 am (UTC)
Totally. Kate's were so frustrating while they were still trying to tease us about her big, shocking crime. The reveal of which made me just go BZUH? But once that was out of the way, we finally got a decent Kate story, I thought.

And aww, poor Claire, heh. I seriously often used to forget she was on the show. Just like now I find it very hard to remember that Libby was ever on.
Mar. 5th, 2007 10:14 pm (UTC)
Yay! Polls!

And a cool poll idea, though I think I broke my memory by setting myself the task of remembering the backstory without looking the episodes up. Too taxing for a Monday night, but it serves me right for being too lazy to click the handy link at the top. :(
Mar. 6th, 2007 03:26 am (UTC)
Oops! I totally should have at least put in a few key words to help jog people's memories! Well, you can always come back and vote later.
Mar. 5th, 2007 10:54 pm (UTC)
Is it wrong that I picked "I Do" for Kate purely because Nathan Fillion was in it? Or that my Jack choice was based on Christian love. heh.

Also? Eko had 3 episodes???? I so don't remember that! I mean, I loved the character to pieces but yet...
Mar. 6th, 2007 03:25 am (UTC)
LOL, guest stars count! :) And I was as stunned as you (and everyone else!) was to find out that there were three Eko eps. Who knew? Emilie must be miffed! But she's getting another one soon. I look forward to emo!goth!Claire, LOL.
Mar. 5th, 2007 11:03 pm (UTC)
This was a toughie trying to remember all the eps. =) The results are interesting. Look how some of the characters are no-brainers like Locke and Eko. Most of the others look entrenched in S1.

Harumph, looking at the totals of fbs., a certain someone doesn't have enough . ;)
Mar. 6th, 2007 03:23 am (UTC)
Agreed, S1 had the best flashbacks, except for Kate, I think. Once they got that annoying business of what her big crime was out of the way, they finally told a decent story with her. It's hard to beat Locke's first flashback. Once KidneyStealing!Dad came into the picture, it was downhill all the way, sadly.

And I hear we're getting another Sawyer episode this season! I finally caved and read some spoilers.

I kind of feel bad about being so confused about Jack's backstories. I remember The Hunting Party (but that's thanks to Gabriella, not because of Jack), Stranger in whatever because it's the last one (and that's the politest thing I can say about it). Everything else is a blur of Christian being creepy and bad wigs.

I guess one could say the same thing about Kate's, but at least I Do was pretty good. Same goes for Sun & Jin, except the Glass Ballerina is the last one and it was pretty creepy.

Sawyer's ... always conning, but always looking pretty with bright signs to tell them apart: Confidence Man is the first one and its got the torture scene, Outlaws has Hibbs, him killing fake!Sawyer, Long Con has Cassidy and Every Man for Himself has prison boxing. I'm a happy fangirl.

No, I don't have a point :(
Mar. 6th, 2007 03:21 am (UTC)
I should totally have put in a few cues like miracle! wedding! Gabriela! LOL. And as much as I love Christian, I think the first Jack story is the strongest. I didn't really start having a problem with his backstories until S3, though, when Jack became stalker!boy and Sarah became the bitch from the hell and all that horrible nonsense about Jack's tattoo!

Sawyer's are all good. Even EMFH has prison!Sawyer and boxing, so it's not all bad. *nods*

I don't really get the popularity of "Glass Ballerina" because I was so bored with the Kim storyline by then... I just hate how the same characters keep popping up over and over in the backstories. No wonder we're all so bored with them! There's been hardly anything new in any of them since S1!

I am not at all surprised that the majority of responders liked the first season backstories the most.
Mar. 6th, 2007 03:18 am (UTC)
That's just what I expected the results to be, except in a few cases. Ahhh, S1, when the flashbacks were new and shiny instead of repetitive and lame! I have to say, Kate's have improved as they've gone along. At least "I Do," was my favorite. I think dragging out the whole "what did she do?" mystery made all her previous flashbacks so damn frustrating!
Mar. 6th, 2007 01:29 am (UTC)
Man, that last one is tough, as they all suck, heh.
Mar. 6th, 2007 03:13 am (UTC)
LOL, so true. I ended up choosing the characters who bug me the least! (Even though I fast-forwarded through most of S.O.S.!)
Mar. 6th, 2007 02:22 am (UTC)
Who said that thing about three eko back stories, cause yeah...

hmm, SOS was quite popular (or least least unpopular) I have no idea what that even was. This was interesting though.
Mar. 6th, 2007 03:16 am (UTC)
Who said that thing about three eko back stories, cause yeah...

I was shocked too! It was:

1. OMG, he was a gangsta!
2. ZombieGirl!
3. Eko's Last Stand

I think the "popularity" of S.O.S. has more to do with Bernard and Rose not being as disliked as Ana and Juliet seem to be. I didn't really care for any of those, and of course, I've never seen Two for the Road and never will. I still cry when I think about how they mucked up the Christian backstory there!
Mar. 6th, 2007 03:45 am (UTC)
Note how a lot of the favorites seem to be the earlier ones. Honestly, writers...*shakes head*
Mar. 6th, 2007 04:59 am (UTC)
So very true. They've lost sight of telling a decent story that doesn't lead into the Big Themes all the time. Or maybe we weren't as tired of that habit at first.

And awww, is that an icon I made? ;)

I chose a lot of 1st season flashbacks, but not the first ones.
It seems that I like more the second flashbacks, if the characters intrigues me. Perhaps I need time to get to know them.

And I liked a lot the on-island flashbacks, because at the time it seemed that we were learning something more on the island and on the others, and it intrigued me a lot.

However, I agree that the flashback thing is starting to get boring, mostly because the writers keep repeating the same themes over and over.
Since the on-island story is strange and intriguing, perhaps they don't want to introduce new inexplicable things in the flashbacks, but I would really love to discover a new side of a character in a flashback.
Usually it doesn't happen. It happened at the beginning but I think it was because we didn't know the characters very well.
Now the writers, for fear of going out of character, are making them behave always in the same way.
And sometimes it is annoying, just like when the authors didn't make Jack behave in a darker way in his last flashback.
