Who is Jeremy Bentham?

So after eponine119 made THIS POST, I've learned this is a real person. Interesting.

Keeping up the tradition of having Lost characters named after famous philosophers (Locke, Rousseau), now we have Jeremy Bentham, who was against organized religion and kind of started the animal rights movement and was a proponent of gay rights! Pretty enlightened! Not that Locke has been particularly Lockian (has he?) but anything that adds more of Teh Gay to the show is all right by me! Also, more screentime for Vincent? ;)

It's definitely not a household name here! I bet the Google searches for him went up considerably!

Cool! I thought that name sounded familiar.

LOL, that icon rocks! :)

It sucks that Tom and Boone are both dead if they were the only gay characters we're going to get. If either one was really, canonically gay. Pfft. We'll take matters in our own hands, of course!

But anyway ... *swings back to topic* ... that is kind of interesting, if, ultimately, just trivia.

Thanks for the info!!

Vincent misses his boyfriend..SAWYER. You know how much he loves him. ;)

Aww, I would love for Vincent to end up with Sawyer again. I guess Kate kicked him out?

Um... o_O

LOL, I think it might just be a way to make us all go "Hmm" but ultimately will just be this character's name. Assuming we're ever going to see this person and he *is* a new character.

(The whole Jacob & Rachel Bibilical thing didn't really go anywhere, did it? And the religious characters have definitely dwindled this season. So maybe we'll get less religion ... and hopefully, less babies, although I sincerely doubt it!)

Interestingly, also the father of utilitarianism, even pre-Mill. Since a lot of Lost seems to center on an idealistic or virtue-like ethics versus a more pragmatic, utilitarian approach, that is veeeerrry interesting.

I guess we'll see. It might just end up being a cool source for a name and that's it. But if this means one less religious character on Lost, I'm all for it. And hey, the Catholics haven't fared well this past season. Only Desmond is left!

Gay rights on Lost? woohoo!

I'm finding it amusing that now there are Jeremy Bentham theories all over the place. It's either zeitgeist or I started a minitrend. ;)

Woo! Because that worked out so well for Tom and Boone, eh?

And hey, it all started for me with your post! ;)

Huh. I think I like this guy. ;)

Lost: now educational, LOL. ;) I don't think that this new character (as I'm assuming Jeremy will be) will showcase all these qualities but maybe just a tad.

(not that I actually care anymore but...) I think, as far as the concepts of Lost are concerned, the most note-worthy thing about Jeremy Bentham is his idea of the Panopticon which has a rather Dharmaesque quality to it... (woo! I finally used something I learned at Uni, go me!)

However, this is way more amusing/interesting. ;)

Wow, that does have a lot of interesting applications for Lost! Now where was all that during the captivity bit?!

And LOL about the head! Oh my!
