Bob Mould - See A Little Light Vid

I was *just* thinking I need to get this album again and then today I hear "See a Little Light" in the background of some car ad! The universe is definitely telling me I need this! (Psst, this is Bob Mould, ex lead singer of Hüsker Dü.)

Also: Some guy I never heard of is slamming Panic at the Disco for *saying* they like The Smiths (and thus trying to be cool) but really being more influenced by Blink 182. Heh, well, the ears don't lie, do they? (So far - Foxxcub is trying to convert me to Panic and I'm trying to convert her to the Smiths, with no takers on either side, LOL.)

Also: PJ Harvey - touring again!!!

No, they don't. Panic doesn't sound much like The Smiths but they sound more like them than Blink-182. But even if they did sound like Blink, they're not allowed to like The Smiths' music?

Really? I don't think they sound at all like The Smiths! I thought that influence was just maybe in the song titles and such! And I guess this guy is saying if they're such big Smiths fans, they should try to sound more like them? Eh, who knows?

I don't think they sound like The Smiths, either, I just think they sound even less like Blink-182. And that guy is obviously just trying to generate some press and it's douchey.

Psst. I uploaded this for foxxcub - Tom Waits, Diamond & Gold, the song behind Ryan's tats, in case you didn't have it.

Hey, we all know where my musical tastes lie and it's somewhere back in the '80s, for the most part. ;-P

Aw, thanks, but I'd already had it when the tattoo biz went down. A RL-friend of mine is a huge fan and was trying to convince me to go to a concert with her.

Aww, your friend has great taste, LOL. ;) I've never gotten to see him live because whenever tickets go on sale, industry insiders always seem to snap them up first, alas, because he performs so rarely! I'm most fond of his '80s albums so I don't know how much of that he'd do. But he did a live performance film, so I've seen that. But yeah, who's cooler than Tom Waits? No one! :)

Her parents were going to get her tickets, but they were all down South and I couldn't go and she didn't want to travel/go alone. SHE LOVES MARTIN SEXTON, TOO. I'm a fan of both lyrics-wise, but listening to either is not fun for me.

Ahhh, well, if you're not a fan of his voice, I don't think you'd enjoy seeing him in concert, LOL! I adore his rasp but then there are several legendary guys I don't dig, like Neil Young and Bob Dylan. Great songwriters, just don't make me listen to them, ha! And hmm, never heard of Martin Sexton!

Yeah, her taste is in stark contrast to my plebian preferences.

LOL, well you go right ahead and mock me for preferring Paul McCartney (yes, even with Wings) to solo John Lennon. And I hear there's SPN wankage against bandom...? Well, you tell them that Styx's "Renegade" is a guiltier pleasure than emo! ;)

Huh. I guess I missed the memo about bands only being able to be influenced by ONE GENRE OF MUSIC. That guy's a shithead, seriously.
Sep. 1st, 2007 02:56 am (UTC)
Heh, agreed, his argument is v. flawed. But they don't really sound anything like The Smiths, do they?
Sep. 1st, 2007 03:16 am (UTC)
Well, no, but they also don't sound like Blink, either. I don't they want to, either. Yeah, I think their name and a vast majority of Ryan Ross's song titles are influenced by them, but I don't they--or any band--are required to sound like the bands that influenced them. I mean, I love certain writers, but that doesn't mean I want my style to imitate theirs, you know?
Sep. 1st, 2007 03:19 am (UTC)
So I just read that Ryan Ross has a Tom Waits tattoo*, LOL. And they sound NOTHING like him, heh. Agreed, you don't have to copy the people you admire. I just thought you'd be amused by this guy, rather than offended. Sorry! And to me, they do sound a lot more like Blink 182 than they do The Smiths.

*So now I get to bombard you with Tom Waits music? ;)

Yep, he does. :)

I like Blink, but Panic! is much more talented and eclectic-sounding.

Heh, so that's a no on the Tom Waits? I have to say, it does make Ryan seem cooler to me, LOL.

And here's the song those lyrics are from, if you care: Diamonds & Gold

Okay, I'll leave you alone now!

Awwww man, on a Monday? I have class on Mondays! Boo. Lemme see if I can get out of it or something....
Sep. 2nd, 2007 06:50 pm (UTC)
Oh shoot! Well, let me know! I'd love to go!

See, I read "Bob Marley" instead of "Bob Mould", which made for a very WTF?? moment. I shouldn't be online when on my migraine meds.

I ran across that post at ONTD. What can I say? I think he does have something of a point as far as your musical influences should be somewhat, well, audible in your music, not 100% pure and straight up because that'd be boring and pointless, but one should be able to pick on something and go "oh, I can hear a little hint of whatever here", kind of like a music version of a wine tasting thing. Not that I know what Panic at the disco sound like, so I'm talking nonsense here.

I ♥ PJ Harvey.

Ha, well, there *are* Bob Marley vids up at Youtube, so it wouldn't be impossible! The vid I posted is from 1989, so it's hardly new either!

And yeah, I get what he's saying but I guess he's kind of a jerk for slamming a better-known band? Panic is one of those emo bands that I just don't care for. *shrugs* Apparently Weezer and Jimmy Eat World are considered emo too, though, and I like them. Sometimes I think every band could be called "emo" if you really wanted!

And ahh, PJ, my girl! If I could be anyone, I think I'd be her! :)
Sep. 1st, 2007 06:25 pm (UTC)
As long as PAtD isn't saying they're influenced by The Smiths because...How? It amuses me because it reminds me of an Onion article years ago about how Nickelback doesn't sound anything like their influences.

//(So far - Foxxcub is trying to convert me to Panic and I'm trying to convert her to the Smiths, with no takers on either side, LOL.)

Have you played Foxxcub "Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me"? Or "Girlfriend in a Coma"? Those are irresistable!
Sep. 1st, 2007 06:53 pm (UTC)
I sent her a few songs (including "Panic," for obvious reasons!) and she decided they're not for her. Oh well, I tried!

And yeah, I don't get how they're influenced by The Smiths either, apart from possibly their name and certain song titles, but apparently they are fans? And also of Tom Waits, since one of them has some of his song lyrics tattooed on his arm! So, yeah, you don't have to sound like the bands you like but I guess this guy's point was don't try to namedrop bands if you don't really like them? *shrugs* I don't know, I remember when everyone and their dog said William S. Burroughs was their favorite author and I chalked most of that up to sheer posing because I don't think most of those people had read any of his stuff! Eh, who knows?
Sep. 4th, 2007 03:43 pm (UTC)
Ooooh...I love PJ...one show only you say?
Sep. 8th, 2007 04:17 am (UTC)
Yes, at the Orpheum! I got tix with Katie. Wheee! :) I've seen her 3 times before but not in years!
