The famed fourth episode...

Dear Ianto,

I watched the episode that was supposed to make me love you and nope, not feeling it. Not only are you not at all my type, but I was pretty much rooting for Jack to shoot your sorry, stupid ass! You endangered all their lives over and over! So you'll just come back to work like nothing happened? Gah! Who would ever trust you now?

No love,

P.S. Still feeling the Gwen/Jack.

yes, I am going to still attempt fic tonight!

Totally understandable, that's why I kind of pushing the "there are other episodes for Ianto," this one, for me, with hindsight was really about Jack and Ianto's "breath of life" *cough*

Yes, he totally screwed up and totally put them all at risk, last week it was Gwen putting half the male population at risk, except hers was totally by accident, she's new and didn't mean it at all, Ianto on the other hand, I think his intentions were good, but...you know where good intentions lead you..believe me when I say this, about Ianto, there are more episodes to come.

But I totally and completely understand, believe me, I was pretty pissed when I first saw it too.

I didn't even find the kiss hot, sorry! I love Jack but Ianto is just a liability so far. Hopefully, he'll prove himself and stop being a dud in coming eps!
Sep. 30th, 2007 02:20 am (UTC)
Ugh, I don't like that ep at all.

YAY for still liking the Gwen/Jack, even though it's like so uncool to ship it. I do like Gwen a lot, she's flawed, makes mistakes and asks questions - kinda like me, I think.
Sep. 30th, 2007 02:46 am (UTC)
Why does everyone "cool" hate Gwen? She's one of the few well-written women I've found on TV, honestly! *scratches head* Is it just that she *is* a woman? I've yet to see any viable slash pairings on this show, so far! Ianto is not impressing me at all. Quite the opposite! So if that's the cool pairing in Torchwood fandom, I suppose I won't be getting into it much!

I seriously don't get the TW fandom, I only keep up with it because it is so intertwined with the DW fandom. I don't find many fics to read, it's a very odd fandom. I get that pairings are the natural thing to write about, and that some of the most interesting ones aren't the ones we see on screen (hello Jack/Sawyer!) - but I really like Gwen and I like her with Jack. I don't really get it, I think she's well written, and she's human - not some perfect angel. And yeah, Jack is hot, I'll ship Jack with most anything (human, alien, object), bu I can't see the Jack/Ianto, even more so in a smoopy way (which is what the fics all seem to be). Oh well, I'm never "cool" when it comes to fandoms.
Sep. 30th, 2007 04:03 pm (UTC)
Hmm ... is Jack/Ianto canon at any point?

I think some fandoms just gravitate towards certain pairings. I like SPN but I can't get into Sam/Dean AT ALL so there's precious little left besides that. Especially since it's a show that can't seem to write or cast decent female love interests, for the most part.

*butts in*

is Jack/Ianto canon at any point?

Do you really want the answer to that question? It's kinda spoilery but not on a grand scale. ;)
Sep. 30th, 2007 06:40 pm (UTC)
I'm assuming that's a yes, then? ;) Well, I'll keep an open mind about him but this episode just didn't do anything to win me over to him!
Sep. 30th, 2007 02:53 am (UTC)
Me too. Not feeling the Ianto love but totally shipping Jack and Gwen.

If I had a boss like that...well, I'd still have a job. lol
Sep. 30th, 2007 02:57 am (UTC)
Hurrah! We can be "uncool" (see above comment) together! I think maybe they should have had this ep after they'd established Ianto more as a team player rather than just a background blip. Hard to sell his "undying love" without any context, ya know?

And ha, Jack is a very forgiving boss! Good luck finding a new job, with a better boss!
Sep. 30th, 2007 05:07 am (UTC)
Thankyou, I've finally found somone who doesn't love Ianto. I get that he loved Lisa, but to put not only his whole team at risk, but the world, is just too selfish to be attractive in any way. And while I'm personally not a Gwen/Jack shipper I can definitely see the appeal. She is one of my favorite characters in the Whoverse.
Sep. 30th, 2007 04:06 pm (UTC)
I think having this episode basically be our introduction to Ianto was an odd choice since all we know about him is that he's willing to betray everyone he works with and is too stupid to realize the woman he loved is long gone. If we'd seen him working hand in hand with them all beforehand (I guess he's just the office boy?) maybe I might have felt a little more sympathetic towards him. As it was, he just came off as a selfish twat, agreed.

Gwen is pretty cool. It's such a treat to encounter a well-written female character on TV. They're so damn rare! As a friend pointed out, British TV does so much better by women, like with MI:5.
Sep. 30th, 2007 05:38 am (UTC)
I didn't like Ianto until the last two episodes. And Cyber? Made me hate him. They either need to actually do something with him in series 2, or let him go. He's pretty pointless.
Sep. 30th, 2007 04:08 pm (UTC)
I've finally realized who Ianto reminds me of: a young Quentin Tarantino. So no wonder I don't fancy him, ha! This ep put me firmly in the anti-Ianto camp. He was such an IDIOT! I guess either people find him pretty or not. *shrugs* Maybe he'll prove himself later on, but so far, not impressed!

Have you seen any further than this episode? Because I have a theory about people's love of Ianto, but I can't explain it without spoiling it up to a certain point. So maybe I'll just hold off on my explanation until you've seen the Stopwatch Scene. (You'll know it when you see it).
Oct. 1st, 2007 02:14 am (UTC)
Nope, I've only seen through "Cyberwoman," but I will await the Stopwatch Scene, LOL. :) I usually like my guys with a lot more testosterone, so I can't see being very enamored of Ianto but we shall see!
Sep. 30th, 2007 05:43 am (UTC)
There might be spoilers, so I wouldn't read until you've finished Torchwood, but bzzinglikeneon is on my flist and very pro-Gwen, and I remembered this post and went back and got the link, figured you might find it interesting?
Sep. 30th, 2007 04:09 pm (UTC)
Thank you, hon! I'll check it out when I've caught up!

Too bad I don't fancy Ianto if that's all fandom cares about! But really, he looks like a young Quentin Tarantino to me!
Sep. 30th, 2007 06:32 pm (UTC)
I got to liking Ianto after the fourth episode, there's still hope! And it's probably because the actor is sort of the bomb. He wears kinky leather cuffs and makes cheeky comments at comms. XD
Sep. 30th, 2007 06:38 pm (UTC)
Cheekiness will help! So far he's batting zero in the personality department, heh!
Sep. 30th, 2007 04:31 pm (UTC)
I started liking Ianto only after 1x08:)
But hey,he is not boring anymore!Remember when I told you wait till Ep.4?Thats what I meant!Ianto is twisted and kinda creepy, obsessed and all that under the perfectly boring image.

What he did was idiotic and selfish,he put all of their lives/the whole world in danger and "He did it for love" is simply unacceptable.But...it was Jack, who let him come back the next day! He didn't wiped his memory and kicked him out like he should've done!Jack wants him there!
Sep. 30th, 2007 06:21 pm (UTC)
Ahhh. I thought you meant this episode would win me over to Ianto love. I personally think Jack *should* have wiped his memory and sent him packing. *shrugs* I guess I'll see what happens in ep 8!
Sep. 30th, 2007 08:02 pm (UTC)
Getting to like Ianto was actually a process for me-I noticed him in 1x04,that he is more than a tea boy.1x06 opened my eyes further and showed another side of him,and 1x08 made me like him for yet, another side:)
Sep. 30th, 2007 09:06 pm (UTC)
I don't think I'm ever going to find him hot but I look forward to seeing more sides of him. ;)
Sep. 30th, 2007 09:23 pm (UTC)
Hot he is not, lol.Definitely not a classic beauty;)
I like him and all-but I don't find him hot at all...I'd probably never look at him twice if not for Jack's interest in him.
Oct. 1st, 2007 02:14 am (UTC)
Ahhh, well Jack knows what he's doing, right? LOL.
Sep. 30th, 2007 06:22 pm (UTC)
Ah well, I thought you'd enjoy the stubborn refusal to give up on the idea that he could make Lisa whole again, you know, the whole love will conquer all thing. Clearly I was wrong! lol. But... the ep does mark the point where Ianto stops being purely a background character and starts to be a bit more interesting. (and by interesting I mean fabulously sarcastic on a regular basis)

As for Jack/Gwen... I really like Gwen, I think she's a great character. Sometimes shes suffers from being the 'audience's proxy' in that she can do dumb things or ask pointless questions just for the sake of exposition but on the whole she's cool. I just have issues with her being paired with anyone but Rhys but I can't get into that rant without spoiling you so I shut up now.
Sep. 30th, 2007 06:37 pm (UTC)
Nah! As I said above, it was an odd introduction, since we had nothing to go on about Ianto so far (beyond his being a top-notch office boy), so this huge betrayal was really more along the lines of ... Michael Dawson, almost! I mean, you get why he did it, but he was still incredibly stupid! He reminded me of the scientist in The Thing who begs and pleads to keep studying the creature and endangers everyone's lives in attempting to keep it alive and then gets (justifiably) killed before the end. Sadly, I didn't even find the kiss with Jack hot. :-/ But if he gets snarky in the future, that'll help a lot!

I'm still rather in shock to find a well-written, well-rounded female character on TV honestly! It's so damn rare in US circles!
