Just got back from seeing...

... No Country For Old Men. I was really liking it for the most part, but for the ending, I have to knock it down several notches. It ends up somewhere around a B-/C+ for me.

Here I was thinking for the most part "Loving Josh Brolin in this ... he's finally getting decent roles, but I can also totally see Josh Holloway in this part! Wouldn't he be great? Will he ever get a decent movie role...?" (Sorry, one-track mind! Is that wrong?) And also thinking it's a welcome return to their first film, Blood Simple, which is probably one of my fave Coen Bros flicks. Just straightforward crime drama with some mean twists. Yeah, not entirely ...

So this is a crime drama, right? Straightforward, mostly one character's POV. Then it switches, about 1/3 of the way from the end and we get this random, WTF, existential bullshit ending that's just about as pretentious as any extended dream sequence from The Sopranos. I mean, it's the Coen Bros., I get it. They like the weirdness. This doesn't have their usual cartoony, over-the-top exaggerated caricatures but ... that ending? C'mon! Random as fuck. I suppose people will consider it deep and meaningful but it's like it came in from some other film. Clarity and closure are not necessarily bad things! Feh. Messed up a perfectly good movie, if you ask me. *harrumphs*

ETA: Have to say I agree with this review in the Washington Post, which rated the film 50 out of 100:

It's meant to be "ironic," with that big capital I. Instead it's unsatisfying, with a capital U. Nobody goes to the movies for the irony. They go for the satisfaction.

Wait, this one's even closer to my thoughts on the film:
