Jack seemed to be spending all his time with Claire and Aaron these days, ever since he found out they had the same father. Pretty fuckin’ huge coincidence, to end up stranded on the same desert island, Sawyer figured, but he seemed to be the only one with a healthy skepticism about the whole thing.

Not that he thought Claire was lying, exactly, when she’d recognized a photo of Jack’s dad as the same jerk who’d knocked up her mom and then did a less than half-assed job of long-distance fathering.

It just seemed too damned convenient, too neat.

Sawyer, of course, couldn’t say a word against the new arrangement. Jack cooed over the baby and spent hours chatting with Claire and Sawyer was left out in the cold. He tried not to let it get to him, tried not to let the jealousy eat at his insides like acid, but he couldn’t help that stab he felt when he glanced their way. Jack would be grinning broadly and Claire would laugh and then the baby would gurgle in the way that babies do and it was all too much to watch and not feel sick.

Sawyer took to spending time by himself again, burying his head in books he’d already memorized. He considered taking up with Kate again, just to make Jack jealous for once, but really, that was more something Kate would do, if it were her gettin’ the cold shoulder these days. Sawyer didn’t even want her anymore. He just wanted Jack, at his side, smiling at his jokes, spending his nights in his tents instead of rockin’ the damn baby to sleep and telling it stories or whatever.

Jack could just forget about Sawyer waiting for him, alone, in their tent. Sawyer moved out after a few days of this happy family shit, back to his old spot on the beach.

Sure enough, the next day Jack came over to see what was wrong. Sawyer glanced up from his book, waiting for Jack to speak.

“What’s wrong? You sick?” he asked, brow knit with concern and Sawyer just grunted.

“Yeah, you could say that.”

“What is it?”

Sawyer turned his eyes back to the book. “Just not the type to wait around for anyone.”

Jack just stared at him for a second and then he laughed, looking past Sawyer, up the beach to where Claire and Aaron were. He turned back, fixing Sawyer with a disbelieving glare. “This is about Claire?” He waved his hand angrily in a vague gesture in her direction. “You’re jealous that I’m spending time with her? Sawyer, that’s ... she’s my sister. We have a lot of catching up to do.”

Sawyer didn’t answer and Jack let out a sigh and sat next to him, hands settling heavily on his knees. Out of the corner of his eye -- because he wasn’t looking, he was still reading the book, thanks very much -- Sawyer saw Jack slump forward, staring at the sand between his legs. If he was trying to make Sawyer feel bad, he’d have to do a helluva lot better than that.

When Jack looked up again, he faced the ocean, addressing the waves as if it might be easier to convince them than the stubborn bastard at his side. “What would you do if you suddenly realized you had a sister? You’d get to know her, that’s what you’d do. That’s what anyone would do.”

Anyone?” Sawyer put just enough sarcasm in the word to make it sting. “Maybe some folks wouldn’t want to admit their dad liked to fuck around.”

Jack was stunned into silence for a moment, as he’d hoped. “I knew he was a rotten father,” Jack said at last, the hurt vibrating in his soft words louder than if he’d been shouting. “I knew he was a cheat. I just didn’t think that ....”

“Never mind. You have this great little family here now. I’m very happy for all of you. It’s sweet. Didn’t know you were such a one for the babies, but hey...”

“God, you can be such a bastard,” Jack said with that bitter little laugh of his that meant he was really mad. “You’re better with Aaron than I am. That kid loves you! You’ve been his uncle longer than I have.”

”Yeah, right,” Sawyer crossed and uncrossed his legs, hoping Jack would get the hint and take off already.

But Jack didn’t move. If anything, he seemed to literally dig his heels into the sand. They sat in silence for a few minutes. Sawyer had forgotten that no matter how stubborn he was, Jack could be even more pigheaded.

“I know family’s not your favorite subject,” Jack said quietly. “I know you got just about the rawest deal there imaginable.”

Sawyer just let Jack talk, because his throat always tightened up whenever anyone, even Jack, mentioned his mom or dad. Was okay to run down Jack’s dad, or bring him up in casual conversation, but never the other way around.

“I can’t undo that,” Jack was saying, voice calm and steady, almost like it was when he talked to Aaron. “But it doesn’t mean everyone you love is going to leave you.”

Jack seemed to be waiting for a reaction from Sawyer, but other than clearing his throat a few times, he wasn’t sure what, exactly, he should be doing. He shoved his glasses down his nose, trying to pretend he had a bit of sand in his eyes, but before he could push the glasses back into place, Jack had plucked them off his face and tossed them to one side.

“I am only saying this once.” Jack said, waving a finger in Sawyer’s face. “I love you. Nothing you can do, even being a jealous, insecure asshole can make me stop. You’re stuck with me.“

Jack straddled Sawyer, holding Sawyer’s head firmly in place as he descended on him like a storm, all dark eyes and wet mouth and rough, raw kisses, as he pinned Sawyer to the ground. He was an immovable force on top of Sawyer, hot and heavy, pressing him ever deeper into the sand, so that Sawyer had no choice but to just give in already and let his body, at least, admit how much he needed Jack.

“Okay, okay,” Sawyer protested when Jack finally let him breathe. “I’m a jerk... I’m sorry.”

”You’re an idiot,” Jack said, tapping Sawyer on the forehead, as if hoping to find some sense in there. “They’re as much your family as mine. What do you think you are to me?”

Jack, braced on his elbows, glared down at him, still flushed with the heat of his anger and Sawyer never wanted Jack more than when he was mad enough to manhandle him a little.

“Uh ... a hot piece of ass?” Sawyer grinned, unable to resist riling Jack some more.

“Yes, an incredibly hot piece of ass I love, against all better judgment.” Jack’s eyes crinkled up at the corners, the way they did when he really smiled. “You’re my family, Sawyer. Even before they were. You know that, right?”

Jack’s eyes seemed to go a little watery and Sawyer found he couldn’t quite get words out at the moment. The wisest thing to do was to just lean up and kiss Jack. He grabbed Jack by the back of his arms, kissing him as hard, as urgently, as he could, an apology and a promise and everything else he couldn’t say.

Aw, babe. You're so fucking sweet. I love you. ♥

I love all the little, cute details in this, like Jack pulling off Sawyer's glasses and poking him in the head. It's just so adorable. And I love, love, love jealous, indignant Sawyer. I think the things I love most about the situation are a) Sawyer has just the kind of personality to be jealous, which usually manifests itself when he's terrified of being left behind, and b) it really goes a long way to show how he feels about Jack.

“They’re as much your family as mine. What do you think you are to me?”

Awww, yay! I'm so glad you liked this! :) I had the idea, actually, before your excellent "Sawyer is jealous of Marc" fic but I figured it was still a new approach to Jealous!Sawyer for you.

I love them so much, too, and I can't help but think that when that relationship comes to light, Sawyer (the fanon!Sawyer, who's madly in love with Jack) would be very jealous about the whole thing, for a number of reasons. And that Jack (the one who's in love with Sawyer) would make him see sense.

Okay, so, I really need to stop making icons based on things my friends have said. But...not today.
