Two drabbles

Drabbles written by request for cmonkatiekatie and bachlava, respectively, as they both stumped me in this "name that fic" meme.

Sawyer/Kate. Prompt: A fairy tale like White Wings. This is inspired by one of my favorite fairy tales, which is a variation of Cupid & Psyche (aka Beauty and the Beast.)

She stretches out her hand but Sawyer is just beyond reach. "I'm sorry," she cries, but it is too late. His gaze is sorrowful he steps backward into shadow, a glint of the wild beast, the creature from whose wicked shape she tried to free him, in his blue eyes.

There is a tremendous crash, as of thunder, and she falls into a swoon.

She wakes in the middle of an empty field, her clothes ragged, her eyes red from weeping. Gone is the house, the island, Sawyer, everything.

"I will find him," she vows, although she does not know how.

Kate/Alex, an update on Circumstance, knowing what we now know about Alex.

Kate fascinates her. She is strong -- they've all had to be, to survive here -- but she is both more beautiful and more fragile than any woman Alex has ever known.

Even though the video image is grainy, Kate's shoulders are clearly shaking as Alex watches. She's crying. It might be the kind of trick her father has warned her about, an obvious ploy for sympathy.

Kate turns, her tear-stained face now visible to the camera. No, Alex decides. She cannot know anyone is watching because she would not cry if she did.

Already she knows Kate better than her father does.

Oh. My. God. How is that so perfect? How.

Gone is the house, the island, Sawyer, everything.

I love your simple phrasing here, so gorgeous.

Oh, thank you, hon! So happy it hit the mark! :) That's one of my very favorite fairy tales I was drawing on. (And wouldn't it be nice if Kate were vowing to go to the ends of the earth to save Sawyer?)

These both are amazing, but given the femmeslasher that I am, of course I'm in love with the Kate/Alex the most. You did a wonderful job with both!

You are awesome, on both counts. I'm a big "Beauty & the Beast" fan too - and, obviously, an Alex fan as well. This is such a lovely, subtle shift in perspective, a look into Alex's mind that feels very real. She's interested in what's going on around her, very interested, and she knows how to read people and situations, even if she uses that information very differently than Ben would.

Sequel summary: Alex blows some shit up, they all escape, she meets up with Rousseau, they blow some shit up, they go and settle at the beach or whatever, everyone blows some shit up, and when she's a few years older, Alex finally manages to get laid without dying horribly. There are definitely fireworks - literal ones. Just because. ;)

Oh yay! I wasn't at all sure I'd done enough with your drabble (100 words ain't much!) so I'm very pleased to hear you liked it! I do think Alex is incredibly smart and perceptive, with a strong rebellious streak. I guess we knew that back then, when she helped Claire escape, but we definitely know that for sure now. (We've got to get an Alex episode at some point, yes?)

And ooh, I love the sequel! If she was born on the island, she should escape the sex=death cliche, right?

I wasn't at all sure I'd done enough with your drabble
If I suddenly decided you hadn't, would you write more? ;) *Bats eyelashes and begs shamelessly for MOAR Alex-fic!*

If she was born on the island, she should escape the sex=death cliche, right?
Totally. ;)

Aww, hee. Maybe! I can't promise anything. Writing and me aren't always getting along so well lately!

These are both good, but I love the second one more somehow. I don't know why, maybe it's Alex's combination of cynicism in considering what her father's told her, with her...innocence? wisdom? in discarding his teachings. very, very good stuff.

Oh, thank you. I'm very pleased you liked it. Alex is such an interesting character -- and canon hasn't yet ruined her for me!
